This Article was in the "WoodWorking Network" MANHATTAN BEACH, CA -- Doug Mockett, of the namesake furniture hardware and components company, set a new class record in winning the Vintage Division at the 88th Race to the Clouds Pikes Peak Hill Climb in Colorado on June 27. Driving with pro rally navigator Angelica Fuentes, Mockett drove a 630-hp 1954 Oldsmobile Super 88 up the 12 ½ mile course, with 156 turns and a 5,000-foot, ending at the summit of Pikes Peak at 14,100 feet. It was a challenge and a pleasure to have attained a new record, especially by the huge margin of 51 seconds," said Doug Mockett, owner of Doug Mocket & Co. Inc. Well be back to try to do even better in 2011. We arent going to rest on our laurels!
Awesome!!! Love to see someone doing something a little different, especially road racing a '54 Olds!

so what is in this thing? got to say I can't really tell from the pictures, would love to think its still olds powered? 455? looks like the chassis is a insane setup. great to see though
Doubt it is a 324 or even a 394, but it sure would be interesting to see what stock Olds would do on the mountain, especially with a dual range hydro with hydro stick.
I've had a bunch of the mid fifties Oldsmobiles. Swapped motors, but never with anything but another Olds engine. Thanks so much for sharing such cool pics. Would it be OK to put them on the 54 thru 56 Buick and Olds Hamb social club?
I would think vintage class would be more than a 54 body, that all looks to be late model stock car motor and chassis but what the hell do I know.
The mighty Olds returns to rocket super status! To cool for school. Thanx for the story and pix. Dig it man. ~Sololobo~
Love the looks of the car, but that sbc thing makes me cringe a little bit. If you're going to spend that much money on a car, why not go ahead and use an Olds motor. He's obviously not a Big Chevy fan or he would have built a Chevy ?!?!?
Hadn't seen it posted here before, so: Course is 12.5 miles, 156 turns, and elevation change of 4,721 feet. Mockett's time in the 'Olds 88' was 13:05.71. Course record (all classes) is 10:01.408.
