Had My car out for a road test to see how it would run on the highway, when on the way back home I started smelling what appeared like insulation burning. Got back home and put it away in the garage, and tried to restart it. it would barely turn over, battery was now dead, and saw smoke from around voltage regulator area. Car was running fine before I shut it off. Ammeter needle was showing in the center of the gauge. What am I looking at, voltage regulator, or did generator brushes take a dump?

    **UPDATE**
I plugged in My onboard battery maintainer, for about an hour. I then went to start it, and it fired up and ran. I let it run about 8 or 9 minutes, then shut it off. It started back up, and I let it run another 5 or 6 minutes. Shut off and tried restarting, and battery was way down. Ammeter stayed in center of gauge as before, only moved to "D" briefly while cranking
