Just got a front end rebuild kit, and I'm about to try and install it. Any advice would be much appreciated as this will be my first time doing anything this indepth. Cheers
Locate a good machinist or old time mechanic that's capable of reaming the spindles out for the king pin bushings if they're worn like most, Possibly the kit has the nylon ones that slip in. Other than that , I believe the 53-54 spindles can be flipped & swapped from oem positions to lower the front end a small amount if low is the goal. Good luck sir. Flux
Hop on over to ChevyTalk.Org, in the 49-54 forum is a sticky at the top of the forum, posted by DZAUTO, on how to rebuild one of these front ends. Lots of photos and narrative. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
53-62 Corvettes have the same front end as 49-54 Chevrolet cars. 56-62 Corvettes use a shim between the frame and cross member to add caster. Any Corvette specialist should have them.
The spindles cannot be flipped on these. Here is the link mentioned above http://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/showtopic.php?tid/218134/
Thanks for the correction 54Fierro, I was thinking of when 53-54 spindles or uprights swapped onto 49-52 models lowers it not quite an inch. Great link on the front end redo! Flux
Thanks for the info! Had a read through the post over on Chevy talk and looks like it'll be a lot of help!
