1951 Mercury Coupe We're Working On

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by oldtimerodder72, Mar 22, 2009.

  1. Ok gang, this is my last post on this thread for a while. These pictures were taken on April 8th. This is a series of shots highlighting the final version of the grille. The bullets with frenched lights were inspired by the Gloster Meteor fight jet from the 1950s. The shape also bears a resembelence to the classic E&J heads of the 1930s.

Side view of the grille bullet from the passenger side. Shows the frenched parklight to good effect.

View of the passenger side grille bullet taken more from the driver side angle. Lense is shown to full advantage.

View of the passenger side parklight taken from slightly above.

Head on view of the passenger side parklight housing. Can anyone guess what the parklight lense is from? A hint, it's not a domestic car, but it is period correct.

Take a look at the engine housing. See the similarity in design? By the mid to late 1950s, automotive designers started to draw influence from aviation design.

  2. I will fall at sleep with a big smile on my face, and dream about that Mercury. Every little detail is fantastic... and it gives me a load of inspiration for my own.
I thank you for bringing the world a beautiful custom.

(And the lenses: Lucas, used at several UK cars. I have still have pair from an Austin I used to own 30 years ago...)

nice metalfinishing, it deserves to be naked. The only thing that looks odd is how far the front bumper hangs out in relation to the grille, think I would have sunk it back further a bit, but still beautiful job!

  10. Beautiful work!! I'm not sure I'm a fan of the severe peak on the front bumper but without being able to see it in person I will give you the benifit of the doubt as the rest is stunning. Love the grill treatment!!

Love it all but the over hang of the bumper and the missing character line in the doors. Don't get me wrong, that is some beautiful work!

  12. Nice work, but gotta agree on the bumper. Needs to be tucked in a bit. Looks like a tongue sticking out :D Just another internet armchair opinion. Doesn't mean a thing.

Very impressive and beautiful metalwork,so cool to see.Outstanding work, love the details.Thank you so much for taking all those pics and posting them on here.

I agree on the bumper though.I think it would look even better if you would move it closer to the body.It just would tie things together a bit more, just my very humble opinion.

Really look forward to see more progress, can't wait to see the Merc standing on the ground.

Amazing metalwork! (I really like the top chop and the proportions of the rear windows... and all the rest!!)

I'm agree with the others about the bumper...
The hood's rib and the grill's form have really the same style but the bumper's form is a little too marked... my 0.02

Beautiful work and design. The bumper doesn't bother me at all. Are you going to be welding the gravel pan to the fenders eventually? The whole front end is so smooth and devoid of seams, those really stand out now.
