  1. Nice chop.
    Great proportions.
What is the height of the front screen at mid point?
    Looks about right to me.

    .

  2. Awesome. I wonder if any shop folks would care to throw a range out there of what this stuff would cost?

    Hey,

    Great build photos and project!

What method of metalshaping are you using to form those Sail panels with? Power hammer or beat and planish, doesn't look like any English wheel was used.

  4. I've decided to do away with the commentary on every photograph. I am going to let the pictures speak for themselves. Running out of unique things to say every time.

Wow - those outdoors shop pics look EXACTLY like my old shop in georgetown. Right down to the climbing platform!

Waitaminuite! That IS a few units down from my old shop! I wonder if the rear driveway is still covered with marks from numerous burnouts! They should have faded by now!

Nice Merc....too bad noone was working on stuff like that when we were there.

  21. I will add my appreciation for all the detailed shots. Very helpful!

  22. Thanks Jeff, thanks all for the compliments. There are a lot more photographs, so far well over 400. It'll take me a while to post them all. Body work is about a month away from being done, then off to the painter. Chassis comes back to me to be plumbed, then powder coated. I'll have the frame all assembled for when the paintwork is done.

Give you a little insight into the power for this project. Going with a 1957 312 motor. Engine will feature Edelbrock Tri-Power setup with Stromberg 97s, cam has yet to be determined, internal components have yet to be determined, Fenton headers, Holmes Manufacturing finned aluminum valve covers, finned valley cover, and a few more goodies. All aluminum pieces are to be highly polished. Transmission is to be a 55 Merc-O-Matic. Rear end will be stock, but will feature 4.27 gears. Front end will be dropped around 3 inches courtesy of some old Barris parts, rear end will likely be dropped 4 inches or so.

Excellent job on the chop/roof profile...most chops I've seen on Mercs do not work...the crown of the roof does not match how the rear window is put back in...but this one looks good.

A great job documenting the work so far...I'm sure most people have no idea how much work goes into a car when doing a frame-up...lots of photos and explanation to see how it's done...

From start to "almost done", You can see my build here: http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=329070&highlight=the+best+55+caddy+build
    and I'm just an amateur...

fantastic build and great pics! Thanks for putting together this very informative thread. Looking at your work will help me with the rebuild of the floor in my 53 Ford convertible. Question: what guage sheetmetal did you use in the floor panels?

  25. Ok gang, here's some more photos. This time dealing with the fadeaway, trunk floor and door button installation.

Here is the start of the fadeaway layout. The drivers quarter has been raised to meet the line from the door portion of the fadeaway. Masking tape has been laid to represent the rounded door corner and proposed flush mount fender skirt.

Don't get rid of the step on the door. That is the sexiest line on a merc.
