So I'm waiting n a starter to come back from getting rebuilt. Then I can hopefully get the 218 running! So then fb market place strikes again lol, and a 251 chrysler flathead six pop up for sale. I've read many forums on yes it will fit. But what parts on the 218 will fit the 251. Water pump, distributor etc ? Any help on this would be greatly appreciated

Don't know. On the 46-48 Plyms you had to reverse the radiator brackets to move the radiator forward so the engine will fit.....

I don't want to hijack the thread so if this is wrong then I'll delete. A guy was referred to me he is looking for a flat head 6 engine for his 47 Plymouth evidently his block is cracked.

Distributor I think will swap. Water pump might but they are commonly available otherwise

251 block is 2 inches longer , can fit but you'd have to notch front cross member..I can check tomorrow on starter...

Will the 50 plymouth 3spd bolt up to the 251?

Yes - use the Plymouth parts from flywheel back. Dodge pickup HD clutch & flywheel were used for harder use..

Having had more than one of these, I can tell you that 95% of the parts do not interchange. An Interchange manual for this time period would be a good investment. They aren't cheap but they are out there.

Those speed parts shown above do not fit the 251 it is the 25” long block.

  11. About the only parts that will swap between a 23" Dodge/Plymouth engine and a 25" DeSoto/Chrysler engine is the water pump, various bolts, thermostat housing & thats about it.............nothing that attaches lengthways such as intake/exhaust manifolds, water distribution tube, crank, cam, rods, pistons are all different and WILL NOT swap between the 23" & 25" engines ....I haven't tried the distributor but have been told that the 25" engine dissy uses a longer shaft.....not sure about the oil pump tho'.......all Canadian Mopars from the late 30's at least thru to the mid 50's used the 25" engine & here in Oz we had both engines in the same year sometimes depending on what transmission was ordered, ie, standard 3 speeds had the 23" engine but if you ordered an overdrive, powerflite or Torqueflite then you got the 25" engine in front..........some radiator surrounds are made with the ability to have the radiator bolted to the front edge of the surround to enable the 25"installation, also extra holes are sometimes stamped into the front crossmember to allow this swap ex factory........also note that flywheels use 4/6/8 bolts to attach to the crank flange and may or may not swap......starters shoulkd but using the starter from the donor engine will ensure less problems tho' no t always..........have fun......lol......andyd
