great car. you know ive seen many 1950 mercs but never a really Original one and gotta say i like it Original better. sure airride and some nice wheels and fat whitewalls would make it better. but the rest its a great model o would keep it Original.
I'll definitely take a look at that when I get the tank out. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Little update.. Got the fuel tank swapped out with a new one, old tank was clogged at the out let like I suspected, everything seems to be working great now. My over drive quit working, I can't heat the relay turn on so I think it's the governor. Been just fixing loose ends my plan is to drive it to speed week in August. Anybody know what type of visor is on this car? Really like it but not sure what brand or year, any info would be appreciated. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Thanks Got the OD fixed up, makes the car a lot nice to drive. It was the rail switch by the governor just bypassed it and works great. Still trying to decide what to do about the 6 volt solenoid, I've heard people do nothing and run 12 Volts just fine and some say it will burn up so not sure what to do yet. Are you speaking from experience? Most people who say you can't seems like they never tried. Ill give it a shot. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Put new arrow star springs and Monroe shocks on also found me a visor! Was having problem with my fuel pump and after replacing everything from the fuel tank to the carb I figured it out, fuel pump push rid was worn. Welded the c shaped crest in and flattened it out and she pumps great. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I too have an unmolested 49 Merc. Eight 2dr, I want to swap out stock flathead and trans for a Mercury V/8 and automatic - any recommendations? I want to keep it stock looking but want to be able to get down the highway and have updated brakes. Does anybody out there have a restorod Merc they can share building tips on. Trying to keep it Merc in Merc as opposed to 350 C
A flathead with a 3 speed overdrive will get you down the road great! Mine cruises great down the freeway and gets good gas mileage! Keep it stock that's my two cents. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
A flathead with 3 deuces with a 3 speed overdrive will get you down the highway just fine! I had a 455 Buick engine and turbo 400 trans already to swap into mine because I also didn't want the typical sbc. I was always worried the flat motor would break down and leave me stranded somewhere. It was old and tired but I was always able to make it home. In 1995 I had it rebuilt by Motor City Flathead and have never had any problems keeping up with my street rod friends. I am so glad I kept the Flattie.
Please excuse the dirty engine compartment, I didn't even think the pictures would come out at all. I'm still experimenting with the camera.
Very nice! Are you running a 12 volt overdrive solenoid? Getting my merc ready for a weekend trip to the salt flats. Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I believe its still the 6 volt, it's been so long I really don't remember. I do know that I've still got the 6 volt starter with a 12 volt starter solenoid though. It cranks faster than it idles. If my memory comes back before this weekend I will certainly let you know. Sorry
Thank thing is bitchin, Danger. I like the approach you're taking to it. Drive the wheels off that thing!
Memory came back last nite. I remember looking for a 12 volt overdrive solenoid 19 years ago without any luck so I just kept the 6 volt. Still in there, no problem.
