Hey all, Apologies if there is already a thread on this, I have dug around but cant find exactly what I am after. I need to swap out my column and steering box in my 1950chev. My steering box prob just needs an overhaul, however here in Oz I need to have a collapsible column to have it on the road legally as its running a sbc. Therefore im thinking ill fix the steering and column issue by doing a total swap out. I want to keep a box rather than go rack and pinion and hopefully match things up with original steering components. I have read about a couple of different options but thought id put it out there. any help here would be much appreciated.
Could use a 54 steering box to get bearings rather than bushings; there may be a difference in ratio also (better), but I'm not certain of that. You'd just have to use a later column to get the collapsible feature, hooked to the steering box. Seems to me there's an Astro van box conversion for the 49-54 cars. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
Cool, thanks for the info. looks like I might not have to change column after all. Just rebuild the box. happy days
Do a search here on the HAMB for "Astro Van power steering", or an internet search; it will get you all the info you need. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
this is for a 54 but i believe it is the same; http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/threads/power-steering-for-54-chevy-car.953094/
