1949 Packard Deluxe 288ci Straight 8 Motor - engine turns freely, clean bores

Recently found this nearly complete 1949 Packard 288 cubic inch straight 8 motor at an estate sale. I know next to nothing about its history. Here is what I have been able to figure out from the numbers and inspecting it. Email me any questions you may have at [email protected]

The number stamped on the motor decodes to a 1949 Packard Deluxe 288ci motor with 135hp and a manual transmission. I did not get a water pump, intake or exhaust manifold with it, but I did get the distributor and the manual transmission flywheel. There is 1 bolt broken off the manifold mounting pad, but it should be easy to drill out. Also 1 broken off bolt that holds the water outlet, but I have a 2nd head with 2 good bolt holes (you can take either head), or you can drill out this one.

After taking off the head for inspection, the inside is in great shape. The ridge at the top of each cylinder is not bad. There is very little scoring in the bores, not enough to catch a finger nail. You could likely get away with honing it and just a set of rings. There are 2 exhaust valves sticking, but can be made to seat again with a light tap and are not bent. There is plenty of oil pressure, it pumped oil all over my driveway as I was cranking it over with a wrench inspecting it (one oil galley plug was out)

I have no idea how much it would cost to ship this motor, but it would have to go freight. I estimate several hundreds of dollars, but I will help crate it and deliver to the shipper. Or for the price of gas I will happily deliver it from Bakersfield to San Diego.
