It was also the subject of an article in the April 2005 issue of Hemmings Classic Car: http://www.hemmings.com/hcc/stories/2005/04/01/hmn_feature10.html dan
Daniel (@Foul) Strohl - Yep ... your colleague, Jim Donnelly wrote an excellent article on the Davis 3-Wheeler ... it is very informative ... you might have also noticed that the 4 pics in post #5 are actually links to the Hemmings.com images.
There was one at Amelia Island: http://www.autotraderclassics.com/articles/templates/generalArticle.xhtml?articleId=63537
Someone's gotta' photoshop one of these with a blown hemi! Or better yet...build one!!! Mart3406 ====================================
There was a Blue Davis 3 wheeler in the car show in Houston in 1949 on display and they did a few demonstrations with it while on display. It ran quiet but I thought at the time it was butt ugly and not enough power, It was very different to say the least.
-------------------------------------------------- Re the Davis 3-wheeler with a chopped topf and a blown hemi - fantastic photoshop job!! But damn it...now I want one!!!! Mart3406 ===========================
I have a 1948 MOTORS MANUAL, and it has a s♠mall section for the Davis. A cutaway of the undercarraige also.♠
Did anyone else notice the purple one got damaged after Carrini bought it?? While he was driving it around in LA it was fine. When he was off loading it back at his shop out east the wide cowl panel between the left door and left front fender was all caved in. Then later in the show the panel is fixed but the color is much lighter and does not match the rest of the car. Sure hope he does better color matching on those other cars he does.
Rex burnett worked for davis motor company in the late 40's---he restyled it to the design that you see in this post----davis bought the rights to the car from kurtis---the company also made a 3 wheel jeep that was quite stable---here is a photo of rex at the table working on the davis and a photo of one of his designs for the car that wasn't used
Checkout the '48 Davis in the background of this February 1949 HOT ROD Magazine photo: "Hot Rod vs. Sports Car" - the Khougaz '32 Roadster vs. Phil Hill (in an MG) at a challenge sprint held at the Davis Test Track
NOTE: This is actually the purple Davis that Wayne Carini purchased in the Season 1 episode entitled Hunt for the Davis ... its restoration (repaint to green) and its entry at the Amelia Island Concours was chronicled in Season 3 episode entitled The Cover Girls are Back!.
Watched this tonight.. Do you think the "green" was to match the green one pictured on page 1 of this thread? If so they kind of missed the mark...but I do like the green better than the purple.
I got to see a demo in 1949 in Houston at the car show. They had a big display and later went out side and did some driving demo's. They were interesting but I never liked the front area.
I kind of like it because it has a 40's - 50's flair to it.. however.. isn't this what all modern day cars are coming to? No distinguishing lines... everything just rounded out and smoothed over. I'll stick to the ol' 40 and 50's sleds. Just my 2 cents.
HA! I beat you by a few days http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=608342 notice when the jacks go down, the wear pattern on the tire.......it looks like he's been doing the driving in a circle demonstration a lot.
@1oldtimer - Um ... that's great! ... but I wasn't aware that the posting of videos (or links to videos) on the HAMB was some kind of contest. NOTE: You will have to share the prize $$$ with the HAMBers who "beat" both of us: * @Mr. Tomato Head posted it in his 1948 Cars of Tomorrow thread on February 10, 2011 * @Jimm56 posted it in the The American Sports Car Company- TASCO thread on February 8, 2011 * @roadkillontheweb posted it in the Vintage shots from days gone by! thread on February 1, 2011 * @ClayMart posted it in the Post your "Beautiful Ugly" Cars here thread on May 9, 2010 * @<FANG> posted it in the Cars Of The Future That Never Were thread on April 26, 2010
@oj - Funny you should say that ... After serving his 2 years in prison (for defrauding the Davis Motor Car Company investors), Gary Davis went to work for an amusement park company designing ... you guessed it ... bumper cars!
I've posted these elsewhere on here, but they should be here as well. I took these last summer at the 2010 Red Barn Spectacular show in Hickory Corners, MI. A great show.
