hi guys, looking at a '47 recently and the everything checks out except that it has the gas tank behind the seat. I thought all '47s came with it under the bed? am i wrong or missing something? thanks in advance
You are right. 47s and 48s had the gas tank under the bed with the filling tube sticking out of the apron thats between the bed and running board. The cab you are looking at is not 47.
...someone could've put a tank there, is the truck stock?...is the shift on the floor,...what's the vin no. prefix letters?,...47's should have "ER" in the vin.
got the vin at work. punched it into the vin decoder on stovebolt and it spat out exactly what i got. '47 chevy 3100. the floor shifter is on the floor. i havent seen the truck only a pic as im out of state, but the side pic i got doesnt show it on the bed. its kinda at a funny angle.
I do not think anyone would move the tank intp the cab- look at all the posts on moving them out- seems more likely someone switched the serial number plate onto a later cab to get into pre 48 shows before the dates changed at NSRA etc. Jim
Does the cab have a Vent on the Side of the Cowl ? Early cabs had a Side vent, I think '47-'48 only ... Later ones Didnt.
I recall reading that the '41-'46 Chevy truck was carried over to the first couple of months of '47 production (late '46?) and were titled as '47's. It was sometimes called the '47 "First Design". Anybody able to verify that? How about a pic of your '47?
very early 47's looked like 46's, but the gas tank was under the seat. ...and I've had a couple 47-8's that someone put tanks in behind the seat, probly cuz those under-frame tanks got beat up by farmers drivin thru the feilds and pastures and behind-seat tanks were easier to find. Pics when you get em,...thanks
1947 used a floor shift. with no parking brake on left floor. 1948 used a column shift, with parking brake in left floor 1949 gas tank behind the seat.
To elaborate on what he said take a close look at the dash just above the steering column. 48 cabs don't have a reverse bulge which provides clearance for the column shifter that all other years have.
47 and 48 Chevs/GMC's had a smoother firewall like this, 49 and newer Chevs/GMC's had an extra ribs stamped in the firewall (look below the master cyl),...there's another set behind the battery. these are both trucks I put together, oddly both were red from the factory, most were green. I've messed with these trucks for almost 40 years and I still keep learnin stuff.
A friend of mine just picked up a '48 that someone added the in cab tank behind the seat. The truck still had the frame mounted tank as well.
Chevy built essentially the same truck '47-'54 with minor changes. Not all changes coincided with a model year change. These trucks are now 60 years old, and most have been repaired and kept going with junkyard parts pulled from several different year models. Many trucks out there that have been pieced together with parts from a half dozen different trucks of different model years. Don't be surprised at anything you find.
