This was an Idea I hade, not right for a traditional custom but something different. The bezels are from a1950 studebaker.

Traditionally, part of customizing has always been to create something unique. I think your headlight idea fits this criteria perfectly.

Exactly, customizing is not like hot rodding where everyone wanted to follow what the latest cool thing was done. Customizers all wanted to create something different from what anyone else had done while using some of the same basic ideas, such as shaving trimwork and frenching headlights, tailights and antennas.

'51 Buick Sombreros are the koolest, but too deep for most wheels.
    EDIT: 1952 (thanks, BuckeyeBuicks. ;))

I have 15" rims with 8,20 mounted at the moment, originaly they came with 14" rims I think they are 5,5" wide.

The Buick Sombreros require a much deeper center. :(
    (I believe '51 wheels were 6 1/2", with a big off-set.)
    EDIT: 6" (Thanks, rudestude. ;))

Look on the Custom Chronicles site ...the forum on mounting 47 Cadillac Sombreros on non Cadillac rims...look to be the same as the Buicks.....

The Buick actually has a deeper dish than the Caddie, as may be seen below.

I think the Buick Sombrero might have become the 'Go-to" custom wheel cover, had it not been for the fact that Buick wheels were the deepest and widest of the era. (In fact, Buick rims were commonly used on Ford and Chevy centers for those deep reversed rims of the fifties.)

Ya I have had them on some of my Buicks and other cars through the years mine actually had the valve stem still in the original location which when reversed put it on the back side of the rim... I still have a pair of 56 Buick wagon back rims with reversed centers or rims ,which ever you prefer, wagon rims being wider than the standard car rim....also in the Hollander I was just looking at lists 42/54 Buick whl. W/disk cover interchangeable with other Buicks and some Cadillacs if you remove the clips and also some Packard's
    42/54 15"-6"
    55-56 15"-6"
    55-58 50, 60, 70 series w/15"-6 1/2" whl.
    59-60
    All 5" on 5" center
    All above are Buicks
It showing a 0.3" center drop difference on the Cad rims w/ full disks
In the one article I read they removed the clips from the back of the Buick covers and attached them to some beauty rings then when snapped on the deepth worked out and they did really stock out from the rim... I have mounted Moon Disks that way before and it worked out OK.....plus the adhesives they have now days would work but it might be a problem if you need to remove them....you got me thinking I believe I may have some Olds , Pontiac , and maybe early Buick full covers still hanging around.... I'm gone...going digging...

Cool. I will have to take some mesurements and look thruw my papers I colected. For the back rims I think the wheel house in the back was pretty narrow in 46 and 47 could even be ind 48 too. The wheelhouses in 49 where wider I read in an article. I think thats why the 15" came out in 49. But not fore shure. my 46 should of had 14" from factory.

Nice Buick. All Buicks of the fourties had either 16” or 15” wheels. No one had 14” from factory.

    1946-1947
    Special 6.50x16
    Super 6.50x16
    Roadmaster 7.00x15

    1948-1949
    Special 6.50x16
    Super 7.60x15

    Thank you.
So the 46 Roadmaster had 7.00x15 tire size. That is a small tire for that huge car.

    Thank you for the compliment.
Skip@ I did the metal piece with hammer and dolly for the curve and got rounding with a strecher. The curve of the floor I did with the english wheel. The deepening was hammered in in three metall rectangular tubes wich I jammed in the vice to adjust the depth.

Not a big progress but getting on.
I will change the mountig bolt hole that why its not welded.
At the moment I'm fixing the door hinges there is a bit of movement in them and the door can be lined up. When everything is lined the next step will be to weld in the upper rocker panel.

I weld the parts with Mig and with a 0.8mm weldingwire.
I want to try TIG welding. seems less heat and easier to grind.
