Good morning. Installing a rear main seal in this flathead 6. The manual says to soak the seal in oil for 2 hours before installing. Is this necessary? Using a Fel Pro seal. Thank you in advance!

Does Fel-Pro say anything about it in there packaging? I am assuming it is a woven 'rope' type seal. Modern production may have improved the construction materials and the soaking may not be necessary.

However, aside from waiting two more hours, what do you have to lose by following the manual's guidelines?

They said it for a reason. Soak the seal, what can it hurt? I would soak it overnight in thin oil and set it in a warm place like on top of the furnace. Those seals are one of the biggest nuisances, and they are very hard to change if they leak. I would not take any chances at all.
