I know most of you know about this but there is a cool DVD called the hot rod story by alex xydias of so cal speed shop and theres some cool vintage footage there, mostly 50's but theres a few shots from the 40's there too....really great dvd
Yes. Charlie Ryan who died two or three years ago and is the man who wrote the song "Hot Rod Lincoln". His father had a wrecking yard in Northern Idaho and Charlie used a Lincoln Zephyr V12 in a Model A Ford Coupe body. Charlie drove the car to many car shows in Oregon and Washington during the past twenty years. He was a WWII veteran and built the car in the late 1940's. Charlie was one of my parts customers, a friend, and a nice guy.
I've always wondered about that, because the song's lyric's say it was an 8 cylinder. A V12 powered A wasn't the car referred to in the song? "It's got a Lincoln motor and it's really souped up That Model A body makes it look like a pup It's got eight cylinders, uses them all It's got overdrive, just won't stall" Bob
If you know how hot it gets at El Mirage and the fact that there is NO shade for miles, you find your on refuge.
I found this :http://www.lincoln-club.org/hot-rod-lincoln.html I also found references to the fact that the song originally referred to the car having twelve cylinders, and later versions by cover artist referred to it as having eight cylinders. This is interesting also:http://www.rockabillyhall.com/HotRodLncln1.html Bob
The original version of the song had reference to a V12. The V8 line was changed later: http://www.rockabillyhall.com/HotRodLncln1.html
You're not serious, right? Go here http://www.hot-rod-lincoln.com/index.htm , click on "pictures" and ask yourself that question again. Click "history" too. Now, to anyone who's looked at the picture of the car -- how many spark plugs can you see on the cylinder bank that's visible? I count 4. Were the last 2 cylinders on that bank under the dash, or is that a V8? Bob
Huh? No it's not, it's about a model A! Sings it right in the first verse! And in the original charlie ryan version he sings "12 cylinders", not 8. Alright, back on topic...
It was a fully painted and finished car.For clarification, from the interview in Street Rodder Charlie Ryan put the Model A body and fenders on the full chassis (shortened) from the V12 Lincoln. Instead of Rat Rod I would use the term "Sleeper".
