What year rear end can I swap in a 1940 Mercury coupe preferably Ford. I want it to be the same width as the stock rear end and bolt right up . I was told 1965-1968 mustang V8 I wanted to confirm. I plan on running a small block Chevy. Appreciate any help Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
I used a ford 9" out of a 70 torino on my 40 ford and it fits good. I'm assuming the mercury and ford are the same width. Also my car has 2 inch lowering blocks.
Finding the same width is easy, but nothing is going to "bolt right up". Lots of fab for ladder bars and spring mounts will be needed. Might be some kits out there for those parts.
Yes I appreciate the comments and understand lots of modifications will need to done in order to install the rear end but what I am trying to find out is what rear end is out there that may the same width as a 40 mercury coupe. Thanks Sent from my iPhone using H.A.M.B.
You need a rear end that is even more narrow then stock.Especially if your going to lower the rear end of the car.Reason being the wheel wells are snug and don’t make it easy to remove a tire.I used a 55 f100 truck 9” on my 40 merc. And put tall airbags. This allows me to raise the rear and change a tire easily.Plus the 5.5.5 rear bolt pattern let me run stock merc wheels.I narrowed the rear end as close to the frame rails as possible.Making it possible to roll a tire out of the tight wheel well.Plus I can change third members to get to rpm’s I desire
I put a 9" from a 59 Ford wagon under my 39 Merc coupe with 8:00x14 tires on it at that time. I used an old PSI spring adapters and made my own radius rods. No problem with clearance at all. Drove the car for several years and the guy I sold it to put 15s on it and drove it many more years. The 39 and 40 Mercs are basically the same car.
