Technical 1940 Ford steel wheel question

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Hot Rod Ron, Feb 22, 2014.

  1. So I picked up some wheels 3 are the same that are 16 x 4 with little oval dish above each lug hole. One wheel is 16 x 4 1/2 and has no oval dish shape above the lug. What is the one wheel that is different from the other 3. All are 5 on 5 1/2 ford bolt pattern ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1393106513.191946.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1393106527.160689.jpg ImageUploadedByH.A.M.B.1393106539.294686.jpg

The dia. of the hub circle opening looks too small to be a 40 Ford. Should be approx. 3 5/8 in.

The 16 x 4.5 wheel is probably from a pickup. Pickups used that wheel in the late 40's.

    I think 16 x 4 is '40 & '41, and 16 x 4 1/2 is '42-'48.

While there is some good info there, not a ton on the many varieties of 16" inner hubcap nub solids.

The wheels pictured in this thread, one has innie lug holes and one has outie lug holes. I'd bet one is stepped on the back and one is tapered, but that may not be so.
There was another thread around that went into more detail on the 16" solids.
