Looking at a 40 Ford convertible, but it is missing a few things for the top. I've been able to find most things aftermarket. The one thing I can't find is the panels in the back that the top bows fold into. What is the panel in the picture that the arrow is pointing to called. They seem to be missing on both sides. The picture is from a friends car.
I would think that any upholstery shop should be able to duplicate that piece. If you can borrow the original pieces to make a pattern and your upholstery guy should be able to replicate the piece from the pattern and perhaps some pictures. Le Barron Bonney may be able to help you with this piece also. I found the kit listed at this URL. http://www.lebaronbonney.com/cart/comp_kits.php
Those panels are made of steel. If you were in Florida I'd let you borrow mine for a pattern. A good fab shop like Metal Union could make you a set in no time. Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Let me know what you need. I have lots of leftovers from my 40 convert build. [email protected] Sent from my iPad using The H.A.M.B. mobile app
Those metal plates are hard to come by but as stated, not hard to duplicate since they are covered with upholstery. I call them rear quarter interior panels which you see on ebay once in awhile. Put an ad on Fordbarn.
Thanks for the input. A friend has a pair I think I can borrow to use as a pattern to get a couple made.
Wescott's Auto has the top formers for their fiberglass bodies. They are $200 a piece. Building your own could save some money. http://www.wescottsauto.com/WebCatalog/K-WindshieldTop/1937-40Convertible.pdf Formers are on page 3. Mine will be coming it out of storage this summer and will start working on it. The car is a essentially a shell that came with all the essential convertible parts & trim but it will need a lot of pieces. Intend to do the majority of the work myself to minimize the bleed of building one of these. Hambers are helpful in all aspects of 40 Fords. You are luck to have access to a pair. They are wrapped so no one will no whether they are original or not as long as the shape is accurate.
Nice research Patterg2003! Although kind of spendy the parts look well made. Hope you do get to the convertible this year. I am still hoping for a build thread on that car.
Thank you 39. You have set the bar high on the quality of threads. I am enjoying your 54 Mercury thread. I know I will be in a good place when I finally can close the garage door and go to work on the car. I will do a thread and look for feed back along the way.
