i got a 39 chevy 2 door frame & somebody cut out the front crossmember -i need the dimensions on the width at the very front -it is a top hat design & had a straight axle thanks mike
Mine measures 21" inside the brims. That is measuring as far forward as it goes straight before that radius. I'm sorry. I forgot you said you just got the frame. I thought the frame horn where it goes through the bottom of the fender would give you a reference point. Let me see if I can find a reference point further back on the frame. (And measure forward) I found what looks like a stock hole at the top of the arch. I took the 21" measurement 18.5" forward (straight line) from the hole. Edit 7 or 8?: Mine is a coupe, so... not sure.
I found some old notes of mine, when I did an install on 38 frame. There's a 2-hole body mount on the outside of frame, about 39" back from the front of the frame horn. The forward holes in the mount, I have marked as 34" apart.
Just for kicks, let me know if it comes out at 21" where I measured. I started to give you a measurement (to that width) from the axle centerline, (it's a straight axle), but I think the guy that installed it moved it forward a little.
You might need to squint a bit, but the original specification manual from GM is here: http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/chevyresto/3932.htm front page: http://chevy.oldcarmanualproject.com/chevyresto/39index.htm
cant seem to open ! can somebody post a pic -of the front end of the frame rail - at the most forward edge-o/s to o/s at the edge of the tiny flange ??thanks
You didn't mention if your car is a standard 85 or the Master Deluxe with knee action shocks? Here's some pictures of my Master Deluxe before I tore all the stock crossmember and suspension out of it. I swapped mine to a late 50's Chevy truck straight axle, narrowed 5" to fit my '39.
