I believe this is a 1938 mercury fender. Can anyone confirm that?

  2. If it's a 38 Merc fender, it's pretty rare as 1939 was the first Mercury.

  3. It does look to be a 39 however.

Good point. These ones may have been on a hot rod, the taillight holes are putty'd over.

Are the 1939 and 1940 rear fenders different?

No they are different. The ‘39 has a small wheel opening and the tail lights look like small tin cans mounted sideways.
The ‘40 has a more rounded open wheel opening and rectangular tail lights. I believe the mounting is the same so they could be interchanged between the two years.
