Earl Wooden and Ron Benham ran this Willys in 1956. I am sure that there is an earlier use of the Willys coupe but I don't know by whom. I was fortunate to work with Ron at Blair's in the early '60s. Tuttle Collection, from the American Hot Rod Foundation (I confess that I have not gone through all 232 pages on this great thread so I can't say for sure that this photo has not appeared before).

  8. This is one of my favorites...the picture below was sent to me by the owner, and you can see it is a nice body when found as well...he looked for one for a long time, and I thought he'd never sell it...but he did...a very nice car...the picture was taken at the Back to the '50s in Minnesota...g-willys IMG_20180226_120445588 (3).jpg

Yes it was Slayer but that's the picture I had. It was in a magazine and I had it up on the wall in my office. Notice it has a 41 nose on a 39/40 body.

Lippi's Automotive at I think early days of Englishtown. Lippi ran at Westhampton a lot when I was there in the early 60's. I have pictures of it but without lettering. Lippi ran B/GS unfortunately so did Jack Merkel and they ran the same tracks. The car was very identifyable by the headlight placement or lack thereof. I think the picture may be circa 65/66.

El that's my good friend Ray Kobel (RIP) at Cecil county for the Div. 1 points meet in 65 I think. The car mad a lot of pictures when it did bumper scraping wheel stands. That was the first time it ever did that. I guess the traction there was pretty good. Ray drove that car to work as a stocker when he lived in CA. He brought it back to NY and made a race car out of it. All steel too.

    If I remember correctly it was a 288" SBC w/Hilborn, 4speed and 6.17 Olds/Pont. rear.

Pat that sounds like a great combination and it sure did stand it up on the rear bumper. That is a very low gear and probably a very high winding engine. I would have loved to see it come out of the hole.

I think that is the "Mystery Willys" and the colored picture is at Dover. The car is up in Maine now.
