So I'm starting to collect parts for my 1936 Brake conversion on my bone stock Model A Tudor Sedan. I'm hung up on the front end. From what I've read, guys run '39/40 Lincoln DEEP backing plates with the '36 wide five drums. What spindles is everyone running? I've read some run the 36 ones, but some run 28-34 spindles. I've got the rear planned: Model A Rear, Drilled 40-48 Backing Plates and Two Piece Wide Five drums.
Apparently the deep pocket backing plates have the same smaller center hole and smaller mounting bolt pattern (and 3/8" bolt holes) as 1932-1936 Ford spindles. Thanks to Dennis Lacy for this old photo. The deep backing plates are far left.
They would be, but are relatively a little hard to find! I just learned how to drop 32-34 spindles, so hopefully I can run those! Correct. They were only one year and mechanical, but the drums can be run on certain juice brakes.
Maybe I am missing the obvious (to me at least), but why not just run 39 brakes? They are hydraulic and wide 5. First year for hydraulic and last year for wide 5. Then much easier to find 37-41 spindles, new or used.
I've been after these wide five vented drums for a long time. I could easily just run 39 brakes with later spindles, but that would be what everyone does. I want some uniqueness to the car! I found that I need 32-34 spindles, and 39 LZ deep backing plates to have the front drums converted to hydraulic.
The wheels are unfortunately sitting till I can find some 39-40 Lincoln Bendix backing plates. Who's holding some?!
