Technical 1935 ford pickup with s10 t5 overdrive transmission

Discussion in 'Traditional Hot Rods' started by Matthias Oehmichen, Sep 17, 2017.

  1. May be I can get any help here?
I plan to put a german flathead G29T engine with a s10 t5 transmission in my 35 ford pickup. Engine and tranny are ready for installation. Here my puestion: What is a good rear end ratio for cruising and keeping RPM low? 3.25 or 3.54

Matthias, with the modest power of the flathead, I would suggest the 3.54 for the best overall gearing. With 3.25's any slight incline would require downshifting out of 5th, with the 3.54's you can still adjust the rpm's with a larger tire size... Happy Shiftin Dyno Dave

Make sure you get an S10 T5 with the 3.76 gearset, and not the 4.03 gearset.

    3.25's are a no-go.

We did a 35 Ford with rebuilt 85hp original Flathead and T5 with 6.00/16 tires on factory rims the 3.00 we had in the 8" at first was too high. Swapped to a 3.50 and it was perfect.

Without modifications, the German flathead G29T is either 90 or 95hp.

I had sufficient torque to motivate this, with the right gears:

  6. Thanks for any informations. I will check the tranny ratio first and also the rear ratio. The pickup has 6.50x16 tires in the rear right now but I plan 7.00x16.

What rear end are you running? If you have the stock banjo with 3.78's they work quite well with the O/D

  8. 4.10 is a stock gear for an S-10 if that is any help. I would not run taller than a 3.73 gear if I intended to use 5th gear very often.

What is the final drive in 5th gear of your S10 trans?

  10. I figured out the t5 5th gear ratio. I have one tranny with 0.86 and one tranny with 0.73
