1935-1936 Ford pickup tech for the masses

I have another question. I installed the fenders, radiator, and now the grill. I'm having trouble mounting it. Should I have installed the grill first?

 

No, some just fit better than others. I had a 35 grille I wrestled for days. My wife said "Why don't you just use the 36 grille hanging on the wall?" 10 minutes later, I was done.

Start with the cab. Make sure you have the right wood in the right places. Mount the fenders.
Mount the inner fenders next, then the grille. Leave everything loose so you can move it around.

 

Yup, I did all that. I finally got it to fit. I made some brackets to secure the upper part of the grill. It’s solid now.

 

Just remember the original hood sides latched on radiator side pieces that stuck out.
These are by no means the best looking ones, but I fabbed these up, because my Walker radiator arms were too short.

 

Those are some serious brackets.
The radiator is supposed to fit snug in the radiator shell and by doing so, it forces the incomeing air to go through the radiator. A schroud is often needed to pull the air through the radiator. Your radiator appears too small and will allow the air to go around the sides.
Are you running a fan?
I know it's a lot of money but the proper radiator would solve both mounting problem as well as the air flow.

I do have a fan installed, but on the outside because of no room for it in front of the engine.

 

this picture shows the door striker on my 1935 with removable door window frames. I am holding the 1935 to I think 1952 truck striker. I ordered 1934 truck striker plates at the same time and they match the one on my truck.
I will try to get a picture of the serial number tomorrow. Its the craziest I have seen. star 3318 I42xxxx star. 18-142xxxx is a legitimate number for 1935 but 18 is passenger car and the transmission is a 4 spd with power take off, definitely truck. The truck is a model 51. Any idea what the 3318 is ?

From the Ford Service Bulletins there is a bulletin dated April 15, 1938 that refers to "Engine Numbers". The subject covers the use of the correct stamps when reconditioned cylinder assemblies are stamped by dealers. The bulletin goes on to say that the dealers should use the K.R. Wilson number A404B stamp set. The 1940 K.R. Wilson tool catalog shows the A404B stamp set of 11 stamps (numbers 0 thru 9 plus the "star"). The same catalog shows a new number A404 stamp set of three (just the 6 stamp, the 9 stamp, and the I stamp). The K.R. Wilson catalog states that "The design of engine numbers has been changed to lessen the possibility of outside individuals attempting to change engine numbers. The figures I-6-9 have been changed. Dealers should immediately provide themselves with the new figures - One-Six-Nine. See Ford Service Bulletin, Subject No. 6000 (Engine) Page 22."

1935 used the new numbers? I have the capital letter I and straight back 6 and 9

 

can anyone draw or trace a front bumper iron for a v bumper
then draw a box around it with measurements - and mark the bolt holes
distance from fender
what is the thickness of the steel and depth

Just use the pass car arms. Frames are all the same.

 

On my 1937 pickup it had the same early strike plate. I think Ford just used what they had. Spacing is different, so they do not interchange.

 

The good guys on Fordbarn pointed out that its not 3318- but BB18- which is a January 1935 assembly. The cab is definitely 35, with the crease at the bottom of the A pillar but has removeable door window garnish and the 1934 truck door strikers.

Friday night was the worst storm I have been part of. My 35 got lucky when the wind blew the tree the other way.

Has anybody used a 33-34 pass car radiator in a 35 pickup?
I was told this works...but???
