UPDATE: started the flathead 6 cylinder engine while the car is on jack stands. ran the manual transmission through gears and I have all of them. Reverse/1,2,3.

I noticed the water pump was leaking and the dimmer switch that I bought new from WWW.OLDMOPARTS.COM decided to simply come apart. so I ordered a new water pump and asked oldmoparts about the switch which they promptly sent me a new one no questions asked.

while I was working on the (new) dimmer switch before it busted I noticed was backwards from the stock switch. so when I get the new one my hope is to hook it up and have high/low beams. but the way it is going, I doubt it will be that easy.

rear end oil changed and new battery box built and installed in the car. but it seems that the 1 optima 6v redtop does not have enough cranking amps to get the car started. wondering if I need 2 6v hooked up in series.

follow my page on youtube where I post things I am doing to the car. https://www.youtube.com/user/RALPHIEKAKES/videos

Your head lamp switch should have one in and two outs. Doesn't really matter which out goes where as long as one goes to both low and the other to both high. Remember 6v wants current flow. If you can't find 1 gauge or zero gauge cables at the local Chinese / Mexican auto parts emporium, go to tractor supply, or farm and fleet and see what they have. Keep in mind you are only a couple years removed from crank start engines. Starter speed is not as much an issue as proper state of tune. Make sure you have a good clean ground from battery to engine or bell housing bolt. Do a static timing to assure you have it set on number 1 tdc on compression and the rotor is pointing to number one and the assure proper firing order from cap to plugs.

6v systems turn over slowly compared to 12v systems.

Just FYI 2 6v batteries in series will give you 12v, but same current (assuming both are rated the same), but would make more power (watts).

2 6v in parallel will double the current, while still making 6v, power will also increase as well.

All that babble said, assuming your battery is in good shape, and if you really think it is turning over to slow, then you might be needing the starter rebuilt...but as mentioned before...clean and shiny connections on the battery, starter and ground will benefit you.

Pops runs an 8 volt battery and alternator on his '52. Starts better, lights are brighter, and didn't have to worry about changing all the bulbs. If ya don't like the alt. idea, run an eight volt gen.

Starters wear the rear bushing oval. That allows the armature to drag on the field coils. Pull the starter, replace the bushing and put in new brushes while you are in there.

6V systems need FAT battery cables.

    update: 3/30/18 -
I got the car back on the earth, all tires on the car, rear end fluid changed out. finally got the headlights and running lights working. High Beams seem to be giving me an issue, but I am not to concerned with it at this time as I dont see needing them to much but will repair in the future.

the tail lights had to be re-wired also, and during that time the issues I was having were the Brake Lights would not activate correctly. tail lights would come on, then when brakes were hit, driver side would go dark.

I took everything apart, re-wired the socket and sanded the bolts from the back of the light bucket, sanded the screw holes on the tail light extension, and sanded the bolts and holes in fenders for a silver metal connection. put it all back together and BOOM! tail lights and brake lights work.

I am in process of changing the water pump as it was leaking from the nose. OLDMOPARTS.COM have supplied a TON of parts for this car. however I recieved the pump and someone destroyed the gasket. they sent a new one quickly after I did a bit of complaining. that should be here today. so this weekend I will get the water pump on. try and fire up the car and possibly take her for a cruise around the 20180327_220609.jpg 20180327_220636.jpg 20180328_171627.jpg 20180328_171631.jpg block to find out what else needs to be fixed.

pictures are taken from yesterday when I put car on the ground for motivation. 20180327_220609.jpg 20180327_220636.jpg 20180328_171627.jpg 20180328_171631.jpg

That's what I meant about grounds being critical for proper 6volt operation.

  19. Beautiful car! Keep working on the issues as you find them. You will get them worked out. Agree that on 6v systems you really need to watch the quality of the electrical connections.

    UPDATE: 4/1/18 "HAPPY EASTER"
I woke up on Sunday ready to start my car and "god willing" drive it, and wouldn't you know it. she "Harlean" started right up.

I put her into gear and pulled her out of the driveway under her own power.
Took her around the block and wow, what an awesome ride. went over some speed bumps, suspension works. drove up a hill and she made it. now that she drives, I can find the leaks and fix them and hope for the best. 20180331_171809.jpg 20180331_171817.jpg 20180331_171838.jpg 20180331_171847.jpg

Top speed today = 35-40Mph. Is this normal? Or should I get more speed? I was hopeful for at least 50mph.

  25. You should be able to do 50 without effort. 45 is good for my '31, but I would think your car would do better. How is the front suspension?

  26. Just remember....you can get it to go faster, but you are still stopping on four VERY narrow tires.

Nice looking '33. I borrowed a friend's '33 for a week tour several years ago. They drive real good. Look up an eye Dr. last named Ambrose in San Diego if you want to talk to another Dodge Brothers owner. Tell him Doug from Hershey sent you.

Well the 33-45 MPH is kind of slow, 50 is still slow in my opinion. but I am wondering if there is a way to get more speed. maybe rear end re-gear or add double barrel carburator and some headers? idk just thinking I may need to get it going at least 50MPH +

got to drive the car to the Good Guys show in Del Mar, CA (San Diego) and it made it Friday but on way home broke down. my fault due to a dumb issue... Negative Battery Cable (which is the positive) melted the connector on the battery post. I checked the connection and the wire that connected to the starter, the starter wire was loose, I believe that is the reason for the car starting issues, also think that is the issue with the battery post connector melting.

I have corrected that issue, removed oil pan, got the 1/4" thick gung out of the oil pan and put new gasket, 30W Non-Deturgent in and im in process of finding a replacement oil filter.

    enjoy the pictures. 20180406_073922.jpg 20180406_073924.jpg 20180406_073926.jpg 20180406_073931.jpg 20180406_073933.jpg 20180406_073939.jpg 20180406_073945.jpg 20180406_073954.jpg 20180406_073955 (1).jpg 20180406_073955.jpg 20180406_073956.jpg
