Chuck Byrd owned that 33 after Twig Ziegler, then it was leased to Bob Smith. Smith was probably the last one to drive it before your dad got the car.

Just out of curiosity how much is a 1933 Willys steel except truck lid, fenders and hood worth in this condition? I have all of the stuff to finish the interior and the motor should be put back in within the week. It has a new 360 tunnel ram 2-4 barrel motor that is going in it. I am just wondering how much to insure it for?

I keep getting a huge range of numbers and figured the best place to find out is here. I will eventually get it appraised but want to insure it now.

I think in excess of $70K. Mine with an inline six was appraised at $30K - in 1989.

I am the previous owner of that car in Memphis. I bought it in 1977 from the guys in Jonesboro. Ran it with an injected 427 Chevy and powerglide mostly at Jackson Tn. Sold it in the early 80s to a guy from Houston. Delivered it to him at track in Hallsville Tx with budget 396 and powerglide. Friend in Dallas later saw it at carshow converted back to streetcar. I have been looking ever since and just now found this thread.

Yup, Buckwheat Racing out of Memphis TN ran it w/injected BBC.
Heard about it when I was working at Memphis Speed Shop and went over to Jonesboogie w/ him to buy that '33.

Fantastic news, it's great to be able to find more history especially after so many dead ends and such a long search

  13. Great to find out more about Wild & Wooly Willys, now we know more of the history, still have some gaps before it came to Arkansas.
The car was owned by Leon Gearhart and Jimmy white of Jonesboro, Arkansas. Leon has since passed away. I will see Jimmy tomorrow and show him this post.
    Thanks; Bobby

Here is a pic from George Gallimore's (Buckwheat Racing) page, which shows our '33 in paint like it was when I bought it in late 80s. One of the mysteries about the cutout at bottom of cowl is resolved by pics showing the original 4 link setup. 564417_1430647103817612_49342304_n.jpg Rear slots had been replaced and front suspension had been changed, leaving only the bottom link rods. Notice interesting bellcrank steering and draglink which was changed. I still have the trans blanket and wheelie bars.

I wore the slicks down to the cores.

Great photo Elgringo. I have not seen this one before,
    1965 AHRA Winternationals, Phoenix, Az.
K.S. Pittman not only won the B/MG Class (NHRA equivalent to A/GS) but also won Middle Eliminator at this event. K.S. always said this was his "favorite race car".

  23. That's awesome, don't really ever see good color shots of this car in it's early days before the hemi and glass '33 nose.

This is one hell of a truck, built and run by Monte Grubb and a great team. Those numbers were run at a class legal 5.5lbs/cubic inch! See aasupercharged.net for more pics. It is also featured on the 2016 Woodburn Dragstrip season schedule.

  30. That 35 above has rather large tires, bigger than 4.75x17. JW
