Found this in great video of car haulers and how race cars were moved in the 60's. Great video with a LOT of super stars of the 60's too many too new for HAMB, the grump, sox and martin, ford drag team etc.

Hey,SCOTTRODSLLC I wish you guys where around when I ordered my 41 coupe back in 2001,I love your stuff.I bought my gasser package from Chris Arden at the now Defunct ACTIVE POWER INC. It took us 7 yrs. to build the car. I think it turned out great, the only thing I would change is I would rather have external door hinges instead of the hidden hinges.

Shipped cross-country to KS Pittman for the big Western winter meets, Chuck Stolze’s surprising 9.70-second, 151-mph Willys swept A/GS honors at both Phoenix and Pomona, set both ends of the AHRA record, and won AHRA’s Little Eliminator. Dave Zeuschel built the 420-inch early Chrysler

The biggest upset of NHRA’s biggest show saw Jack Merkel’s month-old Willys hand George Montgomery his first-ever Nationals A/GS defeat, snapping a streak started in 1959. Jack’s 9.98/142.18 topped Ohio George’s 10.07/134.73, after which Merkel fell to eventual class winner Doug Cook.

George Montgomery was one of the big guns in the 1960s Gasser Wars and was the annual favorite to win the Nationals A/GS and Middle Eliminator. His Willys was originally powered by a blown Cadillac, then a small-block Chevy. Here in an unusual match up against the Bob ford t-Bolt

I think George ended up running the Ford SOHC cammer motor. Somewhere I have a side-by-side photo of my '33 coupe next to George's. His hood sides needed clearance nacelles to clear the big motor.
Also of interest in the photo above is the rather hasty-looking modification George made to restore the leading edge of the front fenders. Aerodynamic body modifications were not permitted at the time and it looks like the tech guys made him put the original shape back on the front fenders. I doubt that clearancing away the leading edges of the front fenders would have given him any aero improvements, and may have just helped trap more air under the car, which is not a good thing.

George Montgomery's '33 Willys MALCO gasser was the terror of drag strips all over the country. Here it is with a falcon pickup he won in 1960.

Not sure if that falcon was born yet in 1960 but that is what it said.

  19. Can't remember if I ever posted my car on this thread and am too old to thumb thru 70 pages so here goes (again?) Bought the car as a Sophomore in high school for $75 form a classmate. He later was famous for growing the biggest pot field ever discovered in Tulare county. Bought a '56 Olds from the junk yard for the tranny (later discovered they quit making dual range hydros in '55, had to trade the '56 to another friend for a '54 Willys dual range hydro that I converted to auto/manual 4-speed), rear end and wiring harness. Bought a '53 331 hemi from another classmate for $25 and got the tranny adaptor for a HS graduation present. Hacked it together in primer thru college, somehow survived that death trap and tore it down after graduation. Took 20 years 'til '95 to get it together in this condition. Been a daily driver ever since. Racing pictures are courtesy of my sister. Her advice; never piss off anyone who knows Photoshop! 2007 WR w- Halibrands.jpg 36willysJJ.jpg March_Meet_sunday_tim_166.jpg GGG1.JPG GGG2.JPG GGG3.JPG P5290010.JPG P1010077.JPG willys1.jpg

I remember seeing your car several times at the Kern County fairgrounds when I used to attend the Western Nats regularly. Always loved it.

  24. Thanx. The car is still drivable, I just haven't driven it for 3 or 4 years primarily because I am driving an F150 to work daily. Hot Rods don't do well in the oil fields! Also My hemi has a weak freeze plug hole and has blown it out a couple times. I have a set of the bolt-in upgrades but haven't taken the time to install them. I want to build a set of fender dump headers with monster collectors when I take off the muffler headers. Maybe this spring I will get to it. I haven't attended the past several NSRA Western Nats as a mini protest against them opening the club to 1984 cars. When I go to Corvette show, I want to look at Corvettes. When I go to a boat show I want to look at boats. And when I go to a Rod Run I want to look at rods, not Yugos with sheep-skin seat covers. That sounds like a grouchy old man doesn't it?

I agree. The last time I went to the Western Nats was the year the NSRA announced the admission change. I let my membership lapse after that.
