Anybody used parallel leafs on the rear of their 33 /34 ford? Want to build my own set up... anybody know what cars are a good spring donor?
this probably isn't the best answer, but I'm using 31 chevy front leaf springs on mine. they were a basement score two decades ago and decided to keep them for this build.
Nitro - if you decide you don't want to build your own, Chassis Engineering makes a bolt on rear spring kit. Posies and probably others make a kit as well.
I went with the Posies setup for my 34 truck.By the time you get all the stuff you need to fabricate a setup you could have already installed the kit.Saves a lot of time and searching. But sorry, I don't know what a good donor would be. I have a 32 with rear parallel springs put on back in the 50s and someone told me that they used the front springs off of a 50s Chevy truck back then but I can't verify any of that, they were on it when I got it.
My uncle just did rear leafs for a 34 pickup and they look like they will work out fantastic. if your interested i can find out what he used and try to get some pictures
I bought this one in 75? Someone back then had already converted it to semi elliptical rear springs long before they were a kit thing. I believe that they were 49-51 shoe box Fords but no proof. They had the buttons in them like the later Posie springs but I was able to get buttons for them from a local spring shop. (I never liked the looks of the buttons but they were there and not in plain sight.) My current 34 PU has the Posies spring kit installed by a PO. If you do use springs from a different car, you might have to play with the number of leaves to get a good ride. An empty 34 Ford bed is not very heavy when compared to a sedan. I like the way both of mine rode.
I should mention that I've had great expereinces with CE parts. I went with the 31 chev units because they were handy and free. if I was buying I'd be looking at CE.
Pulled the 48-52 f-1 parts off the frame section. They look like they will work great BUT they are shot. The hangers are worn through. I like the idea of using the old style brackets and haveing greasable pins. Havent given up, just going to have to hunt for F-1 spring hangers if I want to go this route.
update?--I'd like to see the setup. I'm rethinking my current springs due to gas tank placement issues and have access to F1 stuff too.
This car was going together on the "low down dirty cheap" And I used a pair of 1951 F-1 Front springs, unpacked every other leaf.... And fabricated up the mounts. Haven't put the blocks on it to lower the rear yet. I have done this a few times on 32-34 Fords and it works well.... But if you can, the Posies and Chassis Engineering kits are really slick and and work very well... Low priority project,... cause it belongs to me..... ( I hate it when that happens !)
No shame in owning a 3 window coupe!!! Used F1 front springs and they worked slick and cheap. Wanted to keep it more "traditional" than buying parts from a vender
