Just out of curiosity, what are the triangle shaped things
    on the intake. Great work.

The triangular pads are for a balance tube and throttle linkage attachment. The Austin Healy cast balance tube and phenolic spacers shown will be eliminated and the HS3 carbs replaced with bigger HS6 models. This will bring the carbs close to the hood side so that the air cleaner(s) will not protrude too far out.

    Nice!!

I was wonderin' what size you were gonna run.

Why two, instead of 3? Less fab, easier linkage, or did you already have two?

Austin healy sprite or MGB carbs? .To go for the really vintage look and you have a 6 port head, why not go the whole hog and fit 6 x1 1/2 " or 6 x 1 1/4 SU's?
Skinner Special with 4 SU carbs, originally a morris minor ( OHC 1930's) it has evolved into this. The SU carbs are named after the skinner family (Skinner Union carburetors) .

Great fab work, but why the silly looking "valve cover"?

Am I the only guy who can see the head? Where do you get a crossflow head for a 300 six? That car will be great, and with a 300 six with a crossflow head. it will go like stink! Cant wait to watch the progress on this one. Thanks for taking time to share pictures.

SteeringMount01.jpg SteeringMount03.jpg SteeringMount04.jpg SteeringMount06.jpg SteeringMount08.jpg SteeringMount09.jpg Steering will be a modified '50's F-1 pickup box (Gemmer). I extended the shaft and fabbed a pitman arm, which may get shortened to suit. That should make it real easy to steer. I will convert it from gear oil to grease too by adding a zerk.

  16. Correct me if i'm wrong, but weren't they called USAC sprints and midgets in the 30's and 40's?

  17. I've had a problem with a manifold like that, where the two outer cylinders run lean, the middle ones run good and the two inner ones run rich! Have you had that problem?

Triple A (AAA) was the sanctioning body for major open wheel racing back then.

    Bad Bob,
I don't know why this manifold should present a distribution problem - it seems to me that it would be a lot less prone to A/F distribution problems than many contemporary inline engines. A slant six Chrysler 1V and a Ford 2.3L staged 2V both have centrally located carbs with finger-like, unequal length runners and they perform acceptably well. I also have a 305 ci inline six in a '33 Willys with a dual quad intake on which I am running twin 1.08 Autolites and it runs like JackTheBear with no serious fuel biasing. I hope it will run well enough to do parade laps and cruise nights. The smallish 1.75 CV type carbs should help too. I guess time will tell.

"Champ" cars, "sprint"cars, "big" cars, "dirt" cars - and midgets. I think the line between one and another is somewhat blurry. Even on some of the old CRA roadsters one found the occasional sprint car nose, or as are commonly called today "track T's".

My knowledge on the subject is cursory so I appologise to the purists if I skew the distinction in my execution of this project.

On second thought - NO I DON'T! I am just going to build it the way I like it.

Steering box's shown in mock up are F-100, just so no one gets confused, or is it me who's confused?

  27. :)HEY! with workmanship like yours, I don't think you need to be concerned with the "Purists" In my experience, a lot of "Purists" just read a different book, or article.
