This is a father and son project for a guy here locally. He is building it for the son and they have been collecting parts for almost 10 years. They are having me finish building the frame and suspension, mount the engine and trans, mount the body, and get it a complete roller.

Everything on this rod is pretty high dollar. The body and frame are from Last Refuge. The body is put together well, as well as the frame. (But im not sure what his plans were for the rear model a crossmember, because he had it tilted forward 3 degrees. So I had to cut it out and put it in right). It has a winters quickchange that is converted to 9" axles. Allen Johnson's rear radius rods. The new 32' original style axle from superbell. Socal hidden disc brakes. And to top it all off it will be running a completly built french flathead with a Navaro 3 deuce intake and a 5 speed.

When I got it in the shop the first thing I did was mock everything up on the chassis so I could figure out the ride height of how the frame was going to sit off the ground.

Now that I have figured out where the frame will sit in reference to the ground I tacked some tubing from the frame onto the frame rack to hold the frame solid.

The next thing is to get the suspension figured out on the back. I have to get it exactly right because there is absolutly no adjustment at all in the rear radius rods.

"High dollar" is not a bad thing if it's accompanied by it's long distant cousin "taste". Sits right and looks pretty damn cool!

looking at it, my mind says the suspension relies on flex more than articulation?
when one wheel goes up and the other goes down, when turning for example, how will it not fatigue those axle mounts?

Chris, did you make those radius rods?

  16. Nice work. Is there a torque arm or equivalent to go with those rear bars?

No plans for a bed, just the gastank behind the cab.

I honestly don't have an answer to that question. I just set it up the same as alan johnson did in the street rodder tech article. (http://www.streetrodderweb.com/tech/1003sr_hot_rod_wishbone_suspension/index.html)

Can someone chime in and give their two cents?

Ive been blocking the sheet metal getting things ready to paint. So it all looks the same even though im getting close to paint. Ill update soon i promise. :)

No they are made by Alan Johnson.

Thats all that came with the kit from alan johnson. The owner is thinking of putting a sway bar setup, and a panhard bar.

The rear suspension is relying on the same basic method of triangulation that Henry Ford built into every pre '48 Ford product. The articalation of the rear axle moves in a radius determined by the closer mounting of the front pivots on the radius rods. Think of it as a triangle - put the point down on a table and grab either corner, then see how it all moves as you roll it back and forth. This rear suspension will have a tiny amount of "bind" due to the fact that the front mounts are spread just a bit, but not enough to make any real difference in handling or ride quality...
    beautiful work by the way!

It's an interesting body: 29 cowl with what looks to be a 32 back half.

I worked on making the body mounts yesturday and today. They will be welded to the sides of the frame and have rubber pads on top for the body to mount to.
