How did the Scat parts work out? do they fit the chev 4cyl or did you go a complete different route? and which part numbers did you use from them or was it a complete custom billet that's not available to the general public? It would be sweet if they now have it on file and we could just order a new crank/rods direct. Thanks
Got a parts engine. Looks to have been used as a stationary engine at some point .air cleaner on the right with steel flex hose unattached
Is the 1928 chevrolet overhead valve cross flow motor one of the ugliest motors ever made and how do you make it pretty?
YOU STOLE MY ENGINE! LOL I got a 28 Chevy dump truck in that the 4cyl was gone and it had a babbitt rod 216 6cyl that the rear two cylinders were inside the cab beside the drivers right foot; note large hole in firewall. Had no luck finding a 28 but wanted it to at least look period correct so tried to find a 4cyl ChevyII engine with no luck. Located a Mercury Marine engine which is a gussied up ChevyII and mounted it in---looks OK in my opinion. It just has side mounts in picture and after bell housing mounts are fabbed it will come back out for a firewall filler and the mounts trimmed up nice and pretty. It will have 140hp vs the 40hp (a guess) of the 28 engine so the old girl should be able to haul the dirt.
Saw the picture of a 28 engine and if I would have known it had a cross flow head I could have gone with an Iron Duke Pontiac. Oh well, if there wasn't at least one fubar people wouldn't know I built it.
Wish I had a pick of Herb's engine- it was clean as a whistle and nicely done! Personally, I like the combination of this valve cover, those carbs, and that paint :
Question about using olds head. So I am about to fit a 3 port olds head to my 1927 chev block and note two water jacket holes at the rear of the 27 block that feed water to the back of the cylinder head. The 3 port doesn't have these holes. My question is - has any body tried drilling out the olds head to get this extra cooling or can one simply block off the two holes with the head gasket?. I would imagine the olds head has different cooling issues with the rear exhaust port but I have never come across a cracked one. Top photo shows 28 head with extra holes. Bottom photo shows olds head without holes. Kume View attachment 4104267
Yup- Herb recommended drilling the Olds head! I've also toyed with the idea of running a line into the rear freeze plug area to help with circulation.
Thanks Mac It took a bit of searching but I found Herb's post on the topic. I will drill a couple of holes in my olds head and hope I don't hit anything I shouldn't.
It pains me to admit that I will never be able to work in the garage again. Which means I will never have any use for the 2 '28 Chevys I have. One a stock engine. Turns not rusted. Head and pan off. And the other has a reground cam, Olds head, Jahns pistons. Intake for two Winfield carbs and two glass bowl Holleys with adapters and linkage. Just rebuilt. Crank has been drilled for oil as have caps. Belt drive external oil pump. Bubbas rebuilt distributor with Protronics conversion. Stock dist, Wico mag. Poured and bored at Egges. Can not ship. 650-345-5221 San Mateo, Ca. $1500 or offer. Mostly apart.
Happy to help Kume- just go slowly and you shouldn't have any issues! Rich, I'm really sorry to hear that!!!
I'm very sorry to hear that, Rich. I will certainly put the word out to folks that I know who might be in the market.
Rich that is sad to hear. You are an inspiration here. Your work with non-Ford fours is one reason I keep coming back to this thread. That is a good price for your engines. I hope you can still do some fun things. Bonneville?
I have hear people say, " They're going in a straight line, how dangerous can it be?" I'll show them this picture. Did the driver make it? I hope you can stay involved. I am taking a hard look at my bank account.
Driver got out. Walked to the back and shut off electric master switch. Waited for the rescue truck. After helping load the wreckage, he drove himself to SLC for Xrays and such. Nothing wrong he drove back to Wendover and started planning tie new car. Bob Dalton was going 427 mph at the time it went wrong. Backing up his first run.
Rich, I has seen he pictures after the fact but that in flight shot gives a whole new thought to how scary it was. Sorry to read you are selling your project, take care of yourself.
I watched a car go airborne entering mile 3 in 2008. He did not make it. I'll never bitch about the safety rules again. Is that the team you are helping?
Looks and sounds like he is the type of fellow who probably has the same facial expression in both pics!
A nice chev 4 in ford chassis build for sale in the UK. https://www.prewarcar.com/280551-1924-vintage-special-model-a-ford-chevrolet-with-v5c
Picked my new 4 banger crank this morning. Decided to make a few departures from the GM spec on the new one. This crank is Nitrided & Counterweighted, Drilled for pressure lube, the Big End journals are narrower to suit Ford Model "A" rods, The much deeper flywheel flange is so that I can fit a lip seal to run on the diameter. Had the front drilled so I can clamp the front pulley and timing gear with a capscrew rather than them both being a press fit. next job is to get the block bored, I'm using some Chevy 261 pistons @ +0.030" oversize so the block (which has stock style pistons @ 1/16" oversize now) will be 0.0925" over. EDIT: If you can't see these images (I can't once the post is up) it's because the HAMB appears to be blocking these photos which are hosted on Flickr. They appear OK when the same links are posted on another forum I'm a member of. EDIT 2 Weird certificate problem on my PC caused this problem -all OK now
apparently the Egge replacement pistons for Chev 4 are 0.125 higher than standard - same as 261 pistons.
