Unrelated observation..... In the pic of the 34 Ford with the Flathead... looks like an 8ba, but the hoses are exiting on the side of the water pump, next to the head. Never seen that before. I thought maybe they're hanging there disconnected, but it looks like they're attached. Edit: maybe it's an early 21 stud with the pumps rotated?? Just a guess.
Thanks, Ryan! Dang, in '54, I was just an 11 year old kid in a little town in South Texas... All grown up now haha... Now a fellow Austinite
what an opportunity, with the Air Force agreeing to this - the mismanaged parking, long food & bathroom lines still can be problematic - somethings never really change - lack of safety for public at non-sanctioned events too still lacking - racing is a tough business
We did a couple of Hot Rod Revolution shows with the USAF. They were great to work with in that they just sort of gave us the keys to the shit that we needed and then got out of our way. They didn't help us much really... but more importantly, they didn't hinder us in any real way. As for racing... it's a terrible business... but if you do it right, keep it small, and focus on the fun part... they are WAYYYY more enjoyable to host than some dumb car show.
Curtis LeMay was the commander of the Air Force Strategic Air Command from 1948 to 1957 and partnered with SCCA and other auto clubs to allow racing on the Air Force bases across the country. Curtis LeMay had an Allard J2 with a Caddy engine that the SCCA president drove since he was forbidden to drive. My neighbor (a WW2 vet) worked on the Caddy heads in the Air Force machine shop in the 50s...
Due to Helen Burges, maybe the headline on the last one should read "The Autos Did Run, And 34,999 Had Fun".
