12 volt to 6 volt DC voltage regulator for original 6 volt gauges

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Rayj53, Apr 17, 2012.

  1. I made this instructional video on constructing a 12 volt to 6 volt DC voltage regulator/converter for my original 6 volt gauges to be used with a 12 volt system in my 1953 Ford Customline.
It provides 1.5 amps at 6 volts with a 12 volt source.
You will need one for each of your gauges. Oil, Temp and fuel.

This is pretty much the same regulator that you pay $17.99 plus shipping and handling for from an online speed shop.

Don't get me wrong, I like the online speed shop's and have done a lot of business with them but I try to save money where I can.

Making these myself saved about $55.00.
It's a drop in the bucket but every drop counts.

As you will see, I'm a natural on camera and expect Jesse James will want me on his show before too long, if he sees this fine quality video.

Enjoy, Hope this helps you out.

The parts list is as follows for one regulator:
    1- 1 inch heat sink
    1- L7806 DC voltage regulator
    2- 1u 25-35 volt capacitors
3- 18 ga. red wires 4 inch long
3- 18 ga. black wires 4 inch long
3- 18 ga. white wires 4 inch long
1 tube of Heat sink compound
1 inch of 1/2 inch heat shrink

  3. Thanks,
That's some nice work in that thread.
Maybe my video will be helpful or at least provide some laughs.

Why do you need one for each gauge? I would think you could run them all off of one 6 volt supply.

Amperage is not sufficient to run all of the gauges with just one.

  6. wouldn't it be more accurate also?

Or you can use old cell phone car chargers that are 12 to 6 volt. Just strip off the plastic and use the insides.

    78xx usually support 1A, not 1.5. IIRC
