    A 1-wire regulator is almost the same as the garden-variety 3-wire regulator except that it is internally connected to the output terminal where it senses and reacts to the output terminal's voltage, and it is not connected to the ignition switch. As mentioned above, a 1-wire alternator self-excites from its residual magnetism . For this reason, the engine sometimes has to be blipped to get it to start charging.

    Because the 1 & 3 wire regulators are fundamentally the same, a garden-variety 3-wire alternator can easily be converted to a 1-wire by simply pigtailing the small #2 regulator sensor post directly to the output terminal and disconnecting the ignition switch wire from the regulator's #1 terminal.

    Back to your problem. Do you have an ammeter and voltmeter in the circuit so you can see how many amps and volts the alternator is putting out when all the squealing is happening?

    One wire
    If he goes to a larger pulley the blip rpm will have to go higher.
