Can anyone tell me if there is a difference between a ‘54 Fordomatic and a ‘56 Fordomatic?

I still have the original transmission that came in my wagon behind the 239 y block, it shifted good.

Last year I bought a ‘56 292 and fordomatic and put it in the car. It’s not shifting right.
I still need to do some trouble shooting but I’m wondering if I can just put the ‘54 trans in behind the 292.

You may have to try adjusting the throttle pressure rod. I would try that first before going any further into it. Could also be a sticky governor.

  3. The '56 Fordomatic doesn't start out in low gear unless you floor it, otherwise it starts in second then shifts to third. Or you can manually select first.

    That’s tonight’s job,
It does shift and doesn’t slip so I’m hoping it’s just adjustments.
If I can’t get it adjusted I’ll probably try swapping in the other transmission

This transmission sat for several years so I’m worried the bands are rusted together.

It starts ok in 2nd when in drive but it doesn’t shift in to 3rd until 90mph (don’t ask how I know this)

If you floor it in drive from a stop it shifts in to low then immediately back in to second.

If I put it in low it starts and stays in low.

  6. Yep, sounds like the kickdown linkage needs adjusting....

  7. Have you found evidence of there being water in the transmission? If not it could very well be a throttle pressure or governor pressure problem.

    Quick follow up,
I took the governor off and cleans it and reinstalled,
    Then shortened the kick down.
Now it shifts closer to how it should.
    Thanks for all the help
