    a dying breed...

    Hello,

In this coming school year, our grand daughter was starting her true, middle school years. Instead of a car pool, she lives far enough away to qualify for “Bus Service” to school. But, school busses are a dying breed in a lot of school districts. Big dinosaurs going out to pasture...

Long Beach Unified will have eliminated all of their school busses except for special services. (This will be the first school year with no school bus routes in the district, except for one on Catalina Island.) The school boundaries are such that no one is so far away that they need a school bus.

So, now, it is the massive traffic jam of carpools (SUV or otherwise) in the school parking lots all across America. Get up early to get a spot in line for the drop offs and pick ups, rules the daily schedule.

(in 1939 at a 48 state conference, it was suggested that school district buses be painted a “National School Bus Chrome Yellow.” In 1974, it was a federal standard to have all school busses nationwide painted the same color… “At present there is no federal law that requires school buses to be painted yellow. It is up to each state to do so. Some states, South Carolina for example, paint some of their school buses, in this case activity buses, white, though the bulk of the state's fleet is painted school bus yellow.” The delegates concluded that for safety sake, yellow was easier to see in fog, rain, and other bad weather conditions. Plus, the manufacturers would not charge more for different colors.)

I wanted to surprise my granddaughter with a final “flame” drawing before she started these formidable years. Being in So Cal, hot rodding is primary in most designs… As we were aware, she has loved these pop out and up folding cars from the Ruby’s Restaurant experience, since she was little. So, one final pop out and fold was made for her.

But, the new year brought a change of schools as she was selected to attend an “Orange County School of the Performing Arts,” recognized state wide/nation wide…the car pool experience rules, now.

  22. Great stuff so far, ...Frogz, killer 51 coupe!,...Georgeg, my favorite car this year at the Sycamore, Illinois show was that wagon,...here's my pics of it...

  23. Here's a rendering I did a while back of my 32 Chevy five window and had made into a poster that's hanging in my garage. I've owned the car since 1972 and during that time it has gone through a number identity changes and is depicted here in the latest version. I've posted some actual pictures of it a few times on other threads on HAMB so I hope you guys aren't getting sick of seeing it.

I'll say it again, you fellows amaze me. It has to be enjoyable to be able to sketch anytime you
get the urge and produce what you all do, just like pulling out a guitar or sitting down at a piano.
