In case you missed build thread #1http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=548356

As of today it has been exactly one month since this build started and the progress is steady. Considering I only work on it 3 hours a night, 4 nights a week, and Saturdays.
Last Saturday was day one for the buck build. J-Ripper (who happens to be a cabinet maker by trade) came over and helped with the layout and build of the first section of the buck.
I made the decision not to use a concept drawing for the bucking process. I instead printed about 6 picture of cars I like; The D-type Jag, 58 Ferrari, 54 Cunningham, etc. From those pictures I picked elements of each car I like, such as the barrel shaped body of the D-type. So with that as the starting point. J-Ripper and I build a barrel shape that fit the dimensions of my chassis. From there we moved onto the fenders. I really like the tall wheel arches of the 1954 Mercedes W-196. From there a basic profile was cut and set over the tire and then its just a mater of filling in the gaps. As the back nears completion you can begin to see what the car is going to look like. Kirk! Has come over to help a couple of nights and we spent some time Thursday night squinting at the buck coming up the shape for the grill and hood. But that’s for next time. So for Now here are some pictures of the Rear.<p>[IMG]

I don't know about anybody else but I think the Wood Buck process is the coolest thing ever. That shape looks really cool and I am loving the direction you're headed. Great work buddy!

Looks good. I'm excited to see how this turns out. It has a much more exaggerated topology than the Lotus 11 (or a D type) - much more like an MG A.
Did you make any drawings before you started or do you make it up as you build the buck?

Ireally like the arch of the front and rear fenders. Kind of brings to mind the shape of the bird cage Maserati. Doesn't look too roomy for the driver but maybe you guys have a plan. Basically I really like the progress. Will be one way cool sport rod !

You inspire me to keep the faith on building a sports car. The way you are forming the body with the wood is a great insight. I have a pair of doors for a start. I think they are from a kellison coupe. I am thinking of using a shortened 60 chevy chassis. I remember some build artical from the 50's where they used a shortend 55 Chevy chassis.

i'm liking your build ...its gona be a pretty cool car. i saw a Devin SS on display here once and thort it was cooler than a D-type and nearly as sweet as a Lister 'nobbly'.
You seem to be designing the body as you go which works for me...Just gotta remember to get way back from it and make sure it ain't gone fugly on me! :p

Now if enough people on the HAMB were building these, it would be cool to shut down a small town, block off some streets for the day, and get dirty......Monaco-style!!!

looks good so far... you might want to take a hole saw and drill a lot of holes between the sections and maybe even thin them out a lot in the big expanses... not only does it save weight, but it helps to look through and check your fit on everything....plus a good place to put clamps if you have holes all along about an inch or so from the edge...

maybe you already know this...and just haven't gotten that far?

in any case, keep goin! looks great!
    Zach

this doesnt have a lot of holes, but you can see what i mean...
