What about if you turned the top plate around the other way, I see one of the pictures site they show a picture of the top plate the other way...
From what I have seen on this Forum most guys will understand you need a little bit of help and you therefore have no reason to feel embarrassed.

If you were do this again better to use a nut as per picture then screw it down till the plate hit the shaft then the pressure is on the shaft and...

I would say no. there are two separate things here. The sender should work with a 12v or 6v gauge. But 6v will not work a 12v gauge.
Seeing as the pinion only has 3000 miles on it I would not have thought that the spline are worn. I would buy a HotRod Works yoke kit and try that...
