You wrote that the leak was near a wheel. Wouldn't that be a wheel/axle seal and not the pinion leaking?

What if you took the sed. bowl off and ran a line direct from the tank ( hose barb fitting?) ? That would eliminate the bowl as your problem.
Or just use the 1157 and 'burn out' the brake light filament .
