The Jalopy Journal
Thanks, sunbeam. I'm from Hutch, well Sterling really. Navy brought me out to San Diego, married a local, been trying to get her back to Kansas...
Thanks. When you say "worn pivot plate", is the part that wears the "pivot" that greybeard360 refers to? The 3 plastic/nylon/teflon glide...
Thanks for the tip, when I get the dwell meter I'll check that. I had the dizzy apart 6 months ago, and the nylon/teflon/plastic glide inserts...
At speed on the road, the engine runs great. Idle is still not great, so I'm suspecting carb. Plan to replace the Holley 1850 with a Edelbrock...
OK, here's how it sorted out. Removed points and condenser, cleaned breaker plate, checked vacuum canister movement with a vacuum pump...
Could be.....seems unlikely, but I may have jimmy'd something when I changed the condenser and regapped the points, will check it all over...
Will do, thanks.
I'll check that tomorrow by disconnecting the carb vacuum hose, and connecting my vacuum pump tester....get it idling at 8 BTDC, then pump up some...
That's what I would normally suspect, but it's a new hose, only a couple months old, and again....it idled fine (warm) before I replaced the...
I'll check that tomorrow, although it's a new can, only been on a couple months, and it checks good with a vacuum pump tester.
I'll put the "old" one back in tomorrow....process of elimination...
I'll check that tomorrow...
Hello again. Long time car lover, newb mechanic, learning the hard way. 1955 Ford with a transplanted 302/C6 out of an 80's F150, converted to...
I think it's starting to move....last night I tapped it down again while manually cranking a couple times, and the valve eventually dropped on its...
Thanks. I have been squirting MMO on the sticking valve, and I will work it a few more times before I pull the intake and really look at it. As...
Hot damn, that's how I'm gonna do it! Well, I can't drive it around anywhere 'til I do a complete brake job, but I can run it up and down the...
Thanks! I agree, I was disappointed in those compression numbers, I knew it meant at least an overhaul....but with 112k miles, what did I expect?...
I'll bet it was! I have visions of warming this motor over, too, not full tilt, but enough to be able to show it off. But for now, I just want...
Thanks. I will try that first....but it's OK to run it for a bit as is, on the "good 7"....or should I not?
Thanks. I had the tank cleaned, but haven't replaced the old fuel line yet. I planned to run it at first just using an outboard motor gas tank...
Hilarious. Yeah, in the 12 years I've owned it (it was my Uncle's since new), I've debated selling or keeping it MANY times....right now I'm...
Thanks. I did try that, in all cylinders, before I discovered the sticking valve. Now I know which one to target.
Hello again. They always say to do the compression check FIRST, right? Finally did it today. #3 has a stuck valve. Long story here, but I...
I did manage to get a 9/16" open end wrench on the square fitting, you were right...fits like a glove. Of course, there is no room to MOVE the...
That is a great idea. I did not know the booster pushrod comes out easily, I didn't want to take a chance on damaging the rubber seal. As you...
Gentlemen, thanks all for your suggestions, y'all are very helpful. As it turns out... I re-measured, 5 times, and re-did the math....turns out...
That's why I really want to use this Maverick booster if at all possible....the holes in the firewall and the brake pedal pushrod are all good,...
Good day. When I bought my '55 FrankenFairlane, it already had power front disc brake conversion. It has a Maverick booster, which I had rebuilt...
Thank you, sir. You got that sweet ride up to 200? Top down at the time, I take it?!
My '49 Tudor Custom, "Shirlene", and I thank you, sir. Did you install a new one, or did you install a mechanical pressure gauge in that plug...
