In it's second year of production, the longer profile of the 1940 Mercury compared to it's Ford cousin (116" wb vs. 112") is evident in this photo.

Rain on the soft top. This rod is no lead sled. It is quite different from other street rod '40 Mercs: no bubble skirts, no chop, no Cadillac wheel covers, etc.. : it is nosed, decked, and lowered. The 'blind quarter top' (no window for back seat) is typical for prewar conv. coupes. The industry generally added a back passenger window for 1942 models.

Headlight bezels same as '40 Ford Dlxe, otherwise nothing else in common. W.B.: 116 (Ford 112), cowl 6" wider and A- pillar canted at greater angle than Ford. In addition to a larger size, designer Bob Gregorie tried to give the fenders a 'thick and heavy' look, to distinguish it from the lower priced Ford.

For improved taillight safety I refurbished the pots incl. LED bulbs/new flasher and mounted above the 'Year Of Manufacture' plate a cheap aftermarket motor cycle LED running/brake light. Other than a clean nose and deck job, all panels, trim and bumpers (a fabricated splash guard was mounted inside rear bumper) are original.

The 1990 build had Halibrands, then later red smoothies sporting cheap 7" Chinese caps. I changed to 15" Gennies to accommodate the unique to the year and rare (no repro's) '40 Merc caps with ribbed trim rings. This rear wheel arch is quite different from a '40 Ford.

Original dash and shifter (adapted to AOD with shift kit). Smaller power steering wheel given a vintage look with a dummy '42 Merc horn ring (as with Ford, the '40 wheel was a modern 2 spoke design w/no ring - quite different from earlier banjos). The orig blue plastic ribbed panels were a soy product - a result of Henry Ford's obsession with the bean.
