The Jalopy Journal
This thread is new to me; just now saw it. That said, I've been running a 401 in my '36 ( pic at the left ) since 1965; no complaints. The...
I just now saw this thread; almost a year later. How did your A come out ? I've been running a 401 in my '36 since 1965 so I wanted to comment on...
I realize this is a 10 year old thread; I'm gonna' comment anyway. > If you use a '58 to '60 Bellhousing on a '55 to '60 Pontiac engine you can...
>Just a note regarding my experiences with these transmissions. Out of all the '37 - '38 units I've had there was no problem with installing...
For the record: I now of at least one other guy besides myself who loves the gear whine of these transmissions; I've ran these units since the...
I know how old this post is but, it caught my attention. 1955 was the last year Pontiac used the ''5 bolt'' transmission; ( first year for the V8...
There's a thread here called: " What is the Best Nailhead Motor?" which may be helpful to you.
I know this is an old thread but I just spotted it; it's new to me. In 1965 I put a 401 in my '36 ( shown at the left ). I'm running a " 6 Bolt "...
Wow; more than just 'chipped, I'd say. I think it was half-way into Low when the clutch engaged.
Are your 'chipped' gears for a '37 or the later '4--'56? The early and later are not compatible so don't try to mix 'em up. What year is your Buick ?
Also, on some later cars ( at least '55-'56 ) there is a stamped ratio code between the 2 bolts holding the 3rd member to the housing; between 6 &...
Here are the Pontiac ratio color codes; you will find the paint splotch at the end of the right axle when you pop the wheel cover. 4.10 = Green...
Thanks for your comments here Tom, ( I'm nearly 74 myself ). I've been running '37-'38 Buick cases with '51-'56 Olds ( or Buick ) gears with...
Thanks; appreciate that.
Thanks. - Also; what do you use for a rear transmission seal these days ?
Thanks Paul !
I'm wondering if anyone has a source for 1951-1956 Olds clutch parts; specifically the disc because the Olds has a larger diameter input spline...
What do you guys use for a parts source ? I'm trying to find a clutch disc for a '51-56 Olds.
Offenhauser made it; early 60's.
Yes; that is correct; 4.11 clear back to 1941 in my experience. We used to put P/Glide rear ends in the stick cars.
I must say I was beginning to doubt myself; I can totally empathize on the memory loss.
Respectfully, I have to disagree. One picture shows a '40-'48 side cover with one shaft which operated the shift lever via the vacuum assist...
Even in the 40's ?
On the left is a main drive / input shaft for a '56 Buick; notice the step at the pilot tip. On the right is a '51-'56 Olds input shaft; larger...
I think the '47 is also a 'selector' shift transmission................
'37 - '38 Buick 6 bolt case, '51-'56 Buick / Olds gears, Olds ( '51-'56 ) mainshaft & tail housing. A '49 - '52 Pontiac rear-end which accepts...
