Popping is burnback , clean the tip tighten the connection , inspect/replace the Orings. turn fuel up to 10 oxy can remain at 30 or so.
I would actually like a gun that could pre and post purge for a few seconds if I wanted. I have an old Miller spool gun that has that feature.

Chrome is super tough, good luck trying to get it off with sand paper. Maybe a carbide burr and die grinder.
