an easy test is to block one line going to a rear caliper,the other side should clamp harder.

Yep,thats the gasket i used and bought from Mercruiser,it stopped my leaks.
i toyed with welding a plate in the top of the block,lots ofwork and then you need to machine everything all over again,plus line bore it too....

Ages ago i welded the clutch plate on a fluid drive to the torque converter and made it work just like a standard flywheel.
cheap and easy.
leave the cam stock,most grinders will change the lobe centers and thats not good for that merc. engine.
Leave the lobe centers as is.
rent the car trailer local and return it to the next town over.
Thats what i have had to do.
