You could pull the valve cover and see if the rockers are moving while it's cranking.
It would also be a good time to adjust the valves.
I think the "filings" are actually tiny balls and therefore don't have sharp edges to screw up the seals.

You can get rid of that discoloration by using a stainless brush on it whils it's still hot.

You could make coolant catch cans, cut them down to make tach mounting cups, exhuast tips, or scrap them if they are aluminium for some beer/parts...
