There is no reason not to drill it. Makes it easier to deal with. Then if it breaks in the future,just put a new bolt in it.I do it all the time.

I'd get rid of the blocks. They give the rear end extra leverage to flex the springs and create wheel hop.
I'm pretty sure the 290 horse engine comes with a flat tappet cam and press in rocker studs.

You didn't have water in it without antifreeze,did you? If so,it could have froze and cracked the block and/or heads.:eek:

Maybe you hooked the vacuum advance to the wrong port when you put the Holly on.
It may have been hooked to full vacuum before,and ported vacuum...
I'm not sure,but I think '38 went to parallel leafs.
If a '40 coupe is the car you have always wanted,keep it.
If not,sell it and buy what you really want.
