It sure looks like the plug wires are not right, on a SBC the firing order is 1,8,4,3,6,5,7,2 and the distributor rotates clockwise! Get the plug...
They look better than they did when they were new!

I've never done it, but I wouldn't hesitate doing it in the case that you mention.
They are reverse rotation, not reverse flow!
Do you by chance have a reverse rotation water pump that you are turning the wrong way?

Grade 5 80/90W gear lube is recommended for use with a Detroit Locker and never use synthetic. I don't know if the heavier oil would cause that...
