The Jalopy Journal
It's in my 39 with a built 276 flathead. At low speeds I get some jerking due to the light flywheel. Not terrible, but a little annoying. I do...
I have one with an insert. Been in over 25 years now. If I had to do it again, I would not use an aluminum flywheel on the street.
Great job. Congratulations.
Be aware that the truck pumps will make for a longer engine. I'd use the standard early pumps with wide belts.
be aware that
Will be there Thursday and Friday. Our group is in AA/AB 1-6. Down the hill from the tower.
I always have the decks checked and milled to be flat. I don't think we've ever had to remove more than .004 to .006.
Looks like you have an oil fill up front indicating the manifold is a 49 - 53. Did someone plug the road draft tube hole?
I've been driving my 39 for around 25 years and probably have over 50,000 miles on it and have never used any kind of additive in the oil or gas....
That is just the space between the road draft tube and the front of the block. No hole.
It is only a drain.
Shouldn't be a problem. The bearings are not heavily loaded and they are the first to get oil.
I would never recommend using an M-15 on a street engine. Too much pressure can be as bad as too little. I use stock Ford pumps that I flow test...
Ported vacuum will not work correctly.
I have an aluminum flywheel in my 39 and would not do it again. It is too light for street use. At lower speeds I get some "bucking" due to the...
Has anyone reserved a block of rooms for the Autorama as in years past?
No way for oil to get in water from head gasket problem.
Hand made cleanout, not factory.
Funny man. I've got about 60, 000 miles on the car.
Lighten up, dude. My carb has been on for over 20 years without a problem. Haven't touched it. Shouldn't have to.
They were for a leaner idle. Look at the 3 air bleed holes whereas the other picture shows only one bleed.
The top one is a good candidate for a secondary carb in a multi carb system because the idle circuits tend to be a little on the lean side.
It may have been drilled for that 90% oil filtration. Has another hole been drilled and tapped on top of the bellhousing? If so. the cross passage...
If it was a Merc block, the center water hole would be round.
I've got one of those 38 81-A blocks and was going to fit a later crank. Found out that would not work. Very confusing since both blocks have the...
81A was cast into some of the bellhousings. 38 was a strange year as they went from 21 stud to 24 stud. Also some of the blocks retained the 36...
Yes it would be correct. You also need the fixture for mounting the flathead distributor. They are available on that auction sit.
The Bosch 00012 blue coil for sure. They are around $39 on Amazon. I have bought them as cheap as $22.00. I use them in all my 8BA builds.
Never had a problem with them.
Take a compression test. Then pour some oil into the bad cylinders and run another test. If it comes up substantially, bad rings. If not, suspect...
There is a guy around here who has an FE in a 38 Ford pickup. I think clearances would be similar.
