Looking at 2 motors still in cars -one is clearly 'early" style 331 with rear mounted distributor. Engine numbers stamped behind wather pump read C53-8-18049

The other motor is supposed to be a 426. Large casting number on block passenger side reads 24883304. Under that is DN R1. Can these help date the motor or are there other numbers I should look for. Trying to clean other areas up for more numbers. Thanks

Is the "Other one" a front distributor engine? The 331-392 series engines look clearly different than the 426.

Yes-Distributor is in the front-whole different set up from the older one which I've determined is a 331 of 1953 era. I've enclosed pictures of what I think is the 426

definitely a 426 style hemi...cubic inches could be more or less...I notice an early Indy intake...

  8. What's the plan with the 426? I have a '65 coronet altered project that's in need of an engine.
Also right under your coil should be a flat area cast in the block with info stamped into it.

Looks like a 426 hemi in a '40 Plymouth, sounds like fun!
