I bought this Merc two years ago, got parked in 1973, all there, all original. As with all Canadian cars, the body is pretty rough below the waistline. It will need floors and rockers and some work on the lower panels. Got it in the shop this weekend and started the teardown. Have an idea of what I want to do but it will sort itself out along the way. I'll do my best to post progress pics along the way.

  3. I was surprised when I opened this thread and I see a Mercury instead of a 426 Hemi (The Elephant Engine).

    Cool car. HRP

the name came from the old saying, how do you eat an elephant? One bite at a time. A couple of buddies, not car guys, who helped me push it into the garage thought I was off my rocker. I told them, just one bite at a time.

This one may be more akin to "how do you eat and elephant?" One bite at a time. Lots of work, Tiki, best of luck with Jumbo.

Go for it. You have the right idea, just one thing at a time. It took me over 4 years to replace / rebuild the bottom 8 inches of my Merc Wagon, including the floor, rockers, quarters, door bottoms, and windshield and tailgate headers (damn mice), not to mention frame and chassis parts. Check out my album and "The Roughest Car you ever Started a Build With" thread for inspiration and proof there are at least a few of us stupid enough to take on projects like this.

  9. You guys are way more braver than I am... I see rust like that... I go the other way. Little patch panels, that's my limit. More power to you.

Not all Canadian cars are like that below the waistline!
