I am playing around with a 30 Ford Vicky. Someone changed from the original A carb to a model B. Can anyone tell me some starting settings for this carb? All info will be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

every model A is different. Try 1 turn on the GAV under the dash and 1 1/2 turns on the idle mix screw. It should start.

Some operational stuff...the choke is used briefly for starting, usually even when warm just to get some gas over the hump since there is not a mechanical accel pump. Choke snaps back off on its own as warmup enrichment is handled by screwing out the GAV using the choke knob. Unlike A, the B carb is generally right for running once warmed up with GAV screwed all the way out...A is meant to run with it slightly open.

How about the main jet? Is 4 to 4 1/2 turns open about right?

I don't know if you're a member, but you would probably have better luck with this question over on The Ford Barn.

  6. The supplier that is most knowledgeable about Model B carburetors is rennerscorner.com, (734) 428-8424. You might keep this number in mind if you need parts or information.

You should have the main jet 1 turn open to start when cold. when it is warm 1/4 turn open. Idle jet start out at 1=1/2 turns. Each car is different so you have to play with your car to get it just right.

A carbs are made to run right when warmed and at reasonable altitudes at 1/4 turn open on the GAV, after being open more to suit engine during the warmup. B carbs are jetted to run with GAV closed after warmup. As with idle screw, final settings are to suit your engine, but if much off likely the adjustment is covering for a problem elsewhere, like crud in the secret passages in casting or bad repro jets.
